Want a Canon 50mm prime and can’t decide between the f/1.8 and the f/1.4? Lemme break it down for you.

50mm f/1.8
COST: $80
PROS: nice starter prime lens, great value for the aperture, sharp images
CONS: plastic, tiny focus ring, clunky AF, stiff MF/AF switch, not f/1.4
BOTTOM LINE: Canon’s best “value” lens will get you off the ground very well.

50mm f/1.4
COST: $300
PROS: same as f/1.8, USM FTM AF, sturdier metal build, more pleasing bokeh, controls easier to hold, focal plane window
CONS: costs $200 more than f/1.8, AF not as quick as it could be
BOTTOM LINE: I’d go with this one if I had the money.

VERDICT: The 50mm f/1.4 is the best of the two, but if you don’t have the cash the f/1.8 will do just fine.
