Do you have one of the awesome 70-200 L lenses and are looking for the perfect companion lens for it?

Canon EF 24-70 f/2.8 L USMI’d get the 24-70L because it’s an L and you’ll be able to use it on a full frame body later. It also is wide enough on a 1.6x FOVCF body for walking around and long enough for flattering portraiture. It’s fantastic for low light work. It doesn’t bother me that it doesn’t have IS as I have steady hands and f/2.8 is fast enough for me.

If you have an EF-S capable body and want to save a few hundred dollars, get the EF-S 17-55. It doesn’t have the reach of the 24-70L and won’t be able to stand up to abuse. However it does have f/2.8 as well as IS which is a Godsend when you don’t have steady hands. It’s image quality is pretty darn good, I hear, in comparison to the L lenses. Unfortunately, you’ll need to keep an EF-S capable body to use it (xx0D, x0D).

Because of the investment issue of having an expensive piece of glass that should last a long time and withstand abuse and be a great walkaround lens with enough versatility to get you from venue to venue, the workhorse general purpose lens every photographer should have is the Canon EF 24-70 f/2.8 L USM.
